Ness of Brodgar

Thursday 5th August
Well we all made a concerted effort and got up at a half decent time this morning. Jon, Harry and I took Molly dog down to the village and back then we all went to Brodgar and actually got there five minutes early.

The dig at the Ness of Brodgar was really interesting and we were all taken round on the tour by the dig director. They seem to finding new and unexpected things every week so that as soon have they decide that the have a good idea of what was going on there, they have to re-assess their findings. In the past two weeks they have found painted decoration on some of the buildings. This is the first discovery of neolithic decorated buildings in northern Europe.

The Ness is right in the centre of the greatest concentration of neolithic sites in Orkney and it appears to be separated from the other sites at Stennes, Barnhouse and the Ring of Brodgar by large walls.

The buildings are massive and the largest has been called a neolithic cathedral so with all the buildings on the site being separated from the outside world by the walls it gives the impression of a temple complex but 5000 years old, long before the Greeks or Romans.

This is how women should be. Attractive, dirty and on their knees.

Apparently the population of Orkney at the time was about 10,000 and they reckon that others may have come from England, Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia.

You see, Orkney has always been the centre of the civilised world.

Back home and took the dog for a walk. After tea Pam insisted that Jon and I went to The Sands for a beer or two. Well perhaps "insisted" is to strong a word but we went for a beer anyway.

There was supposed to be a good chance of a reasonable Aurora Borealis "Merry dancers" tonight but as of 11:30PM there was just a bit of red and green low on the horizon, pulsating slightly but not really much to write home about.
